Foodies Care Partner Profile: Five STAR Veterans Center Restores Hope for Jacksonville Veterans

For many veterans, the transition from instability to independence requires more than a temporary place to stay. It requires structure, accountability, compassion, and a community that refuses to give up.

That mission is at the heart of Five STAR Veterans Center, a Jacksonville nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless veterans restore hope, regain stability, and build sustainable, independent lives. Led by CEO John Bear, a veteran who served 32 years as a Naval Officer, the organization brings military-informed care and a clear path forward to veterans facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.

About Five STAR Veterans Center

Founded in March 2012, Five STAR Veterans Center was created to assist veterans in overcoming challenges such as addiction, financial hardship, and mental wellness concerns, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injuries.

The organization’s mission is clear: to restore hope and independence for homeless veterans through stability and purpose.

Today, up to 35 veterans can reside at Five STAR Veterans Center and participate in programs designed to help them overcome personal challenges, reenter the workforce, and work toward a sustainable, independent life.

A Structured Path from Housing Instability to Independence

What sets Five STAR Veterans Center apart is its Passport to Independence Program. This program is not designed to simply shelter veterans. Instead, it helps move veterans toward independence through a structured, phased model.

The approach pairs military-informed care with a results-focused framework. Under the leadership of a retired Navy Commander and within VA Grant
